Autonomous AI agents
AI Agent Development for Australian Businesses
AI agents that plan the steps, use your systems to carry them out, check their own work and ask for help when unsure. Agentyis designs, builds and runs autonomous AI agents with the guardrails, monitoring and audit trail your business needs.
What are autonomous AI agents?
Autonomous AI agents are AI systems that pursue a goal across several steps on their own: they read information, decide what to do next, use tools such as your CRM or finance system, and check the result. Unlike a chatbot, they act rather than only answer, within the limits and approvals you set.
The practical difference is scope. A rule-based bot can move an invoice from an inbox into your accounting system. An agent can receive the invoice, extract and validate the details, match it against the purchase order, chase the discrepancy with the supplier by email, and escalate to a person only when the exception genuinely needs judgement.
What Makes an AI Agent
An agent combines a reasoning model with three things traditional automation lacks.
Reasoning
A large language model works out the next step towards the goal, rather than following a fixed script.
Tools
The agent can act: query a database, update a CRM record, send an email, create an invoice or call an API.
Memory and context
It holds the state of a task across steps, so it can finish multi-stage work instead of a single request.
A goal and guardrails
You define the outcome and the limits. The agent works out the sequence of steps inside them.
Where AI Agents Work Best
The strongest results come from work that is high volume, multi-step and full of small judgement calls that used to need a person in the loop.
Customer operations
Resolve routine service requests end to end: check order status, process changes and issue refunds within policy, handing off cleanly when a case falls outside the agent’s authority.
Finance and administration
Accounts payable exceptions, expense triage, reconciliation follow-ups and month-end preparation across systems that never talked to each other.
Sales and quoting
Assemble quotes from product rules and pricing tables, qualify inbound leads and keep the CRM accurate without rep effort.
Compliance and reporting
Gather evidence, draft submissions and monitor obligations, with every action logged for audit.
Internal support
IT and HR helpdesks where the agent handles password resets, access requests and policy questions, escalating genuine incidents.
How We Build AI Agents
- 1
Choose the workflow
One process where volume is high, the rules are mostly clear and the exceptions consume your team.
- 2
Define goal and guardrails
What the agent may do, what needs approval, what it must never do, and how success is measured.
- 3
Connect the tools
Secure, least-privilege access to the systems the agent needs, and nothing more.
- 4
Shadow mode
The agent runs against real cases without acting, and we measure its accuracy against your team.
- 5
Graduated autonomy
It recommends, then acts with approval, then acts within limits, with monitoring and audit logs throughout.
The Risks, and How We Manage Them
Agents act, and anything that acts can act wrongly. The failure modes are predictable and manageable:
- Over-permissioning: the agent holds the narrowest possible access, for example approving refunds only within a limit, or drafting emails for review until it has earned autonomy.
- Invented actions: the agent is grounded in your data and constrained by validation rules, not left to improvise.
- Silent drift: models, prompts and connected systems change, so production agents are monitored, evaluated and alerted on like any critical system.
- Privacy: personal information is handled within the Privacy Act 1988, and data flows to and from the model are designed, not discovered.
Ongoing monitoring is part of our AI monitoring, governance and compliance service. For agents that make or support business decisions at scale, see autonomous decision systems, and for blending agents with proven bots, see intelligent process automation. Agents can also sit behind an AI receptionist to finish the work a call starts. For the wider comparison, read RPA vs IPA vs agentic AI.
Copilot Studio agents or a custom autonomous agent: which do you need?
Copilot Studio is often enough when the work lives inside Microsoft 365, the steps are well defined and a person stays in the loop, such as answering staff questions from SharePoint or drafting emails. A custom autonomous agent is worth it when the agent must act across several non-Microsoft systems, handle high volumes or follow strict rules.
Microsoft Copilot Studio is Microsoft's copilot agent builder: a low-code tool for creating agents that use your Microsoft 365 data, connect to other systems through Power Platform connectors and Power Automate flows, and run in Teams or Microsoft 365 Copilot. For many businesses already on Microsoft 365, it is the fastest way to put a useful agent for business in front of staff. Licensing and usage costs change, so check Microsoft's official Copilot Studio pricing page rather than relying on figures quoted elsewhere.
Signs you need a custom build
- The agent has to read and write in systems with no ready-made connector, such as an industry platform or your own database.
- Volumes are high enough that usage-based pricing, limits or response times become a constraint.
- The work needs strict validation, approval limits and a full audit trail of every action, beyond what a low-code flow records.
- You want control over which model is used and where data is processed.
- Several agents need to pass work to each other, with monitoring across the whole chain.
Autonomous agents built as custom software take longer to deliver and need ongoing ownership, so we often start in Copilot Studio, prove the workflow, and move to a custom build only where the limits start to bite. AI Agent FAQs
What is the difference between an AI agent and a chatbot?
A chatbot converses; an agent acts. Many production systems combine both: a conversational front end, such as an AI receptionist or web chat, with an agent behind it that actually completes the work.
How is an AI agent different from RPA?
RPA follows fixed steps and breaks when something unexpected happens. An AI agent works towards a goal, handles variation such as unstructured emails and documents, and escalates genuine exceptions. Many businesses use both: RPA for stable, rule-based steps and agents for the judgement in between.
Do AI agents replace staff?
In practice they absorb the repetitive middle of a role, the chasing, checking and re-keying, and raise the volume a team can handle. The judgement-heavy work stays with people, and the audit trail improves.
How do you keep an AI agent safe?
Narrow permissions, validation rules, human approval for consequential actions and continuous monitoring. Treat the agent like a new employee on probation: limited authority that expands as it proves itself, with every action logged.
How much does AI agent development cost?
It depends on scope: a single-workflow agent with clear guardrails is a much smaller project than a department-level agent connected to several systems. We quote a fixed price after a free scoping call, and our AI readiness assessment can identify which workflow will pay back first.
Can we build our own Copilot Studio agents?
Yes. Copilot Studio is designed for business users as well as developers, and a simple agent that answers staff questions from your documents is a reasonable first project. Bring in help when the agent needs to take actions in other systems, handle customer data or run without a person checking each step.
